DONE with college!

Posted on Aug 7th, 2008 by Calamity Babs : activist Calamity Babs
I started it in 1980 so it's about time, wouldn't you say?  But one never stops learning and everyday is a new chance to start over.

Today started out quite beautiful, but I was too tired to remember to bring my camera. Driving to the next town to pick up the 5-gallon bucket of a friend's cast off vegies and fruits so that I could spread it out as a free buffet for all the birds, rabbits, chipmunks and squirrels.

The sky had a double rainbow towards the Joshua Tree National Park with the sky darker than the hills which had a blanket of shadows from the clouds.  This morning I saw the two most beautiful creatures walking out in my back yard towards their den;  two healthy and happy coyotes, the mother & child?  The 2nd one trailing was born last January and has a cougar-like yodel.  I still have so many beautiful bunnies and Jackrabbits, who I feed with healthy items so in turn my favorite dog from Nature, the coyote is equally healthy and well fed! My dogs howl with them at night and it is a musical symphony like nothing else (well, maybe the wolves of the Yukon).

God, you outdid Yourself with such a beautiful morning filled with your beautiful and amazing creatures!

When I was taking those 2 classes online back to back, I was never able to concentrate on the beauty outside my window and apreciate my skies!  I have piles of my notes still, and copies of my Finals with some nice 'A's and 'B's to show for that hard word, but I'm glad to back with the land of the living and its wonderous gifts!  NO more being up until 4 am to finish my assignments and papers. Now I can go outside and see the Milky Way over my house at night and enjoy my new dog-sitting jobs where degrees weren't needed anyway!

I enjoy spending time and taking care of my neighbors pets while they're away river rafting, taking cruises to faraway places and knowing their dogs, cats or desert tortoises are in good and loving hands upon their return!  From making $100 per day to only $10/ day seems more reasonable since I'm enjoying these new jobs so much more! And having their pets jump up on me in a loving way is very satisfying.  Filling up my neighbors' bird feeders so that our local nature is kept up in its usual, giving habits.

College was fun, but now I'm FREE!!!!  Hello out there! :-)

When was the last time you took time to play?

I play with my dogs, I have 6 large ex-strays. Many live in my small house and I have a few acres of fenced yard so go out or play catch inside with them. They are my delight and joy. They ignore the Jackrabbits on the other side of the fence and the Quail which they used to have to eat in order to survive.  When the coyotes come by to howl they no longer bark at them but howl with them so my place is quite musical.

If you could comfort one person right now, who would it be?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 27, 2008:

My neighbor who has four brothers who constantly dump their problems on her, including the responsibilities of the oldest brother who is mentally ill.  She is quite stressed and I hope she will let me take her to our local art galleries and free concerts again when she returns to my area on her way home to the Coast. Things that I know she enjoys and takes her mind off her problems. She is a very giving person and shares too much of herself without giving herself time to have fun by herself.

What was the last thing you learned from a child?

If its a child having a tantrum in public? (and the parents are doing nothing to quiet them) when I walk up to them and tell them there's duct tape in my trunk, they shut up.
I'm very much against child abuse and such, but also against adults being manipulated by children.  But despite my W.C. Fields' attitude towards rug rats, I do wave and smile at the ones who seem genuinely nice and are quiet.  I am available for babysitting....

Are you a creature of habit?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 04, 2008:

Yes, I can be very much so...every morning (whether it is 4 am or 8 am) I feed and give fresh water to my six stray dogs and make my Caribou Coffee, read the paper and begin getting ready for my day of picking up and sorting the junk mail for my retired friend Jim, tending to my friend Katie's dogs, and writing my 3-minute speeches for the upcoming towncouncil meetings, planning commission meetings or as the member of the Board of Directors where I live.  I belong to several environmental groups, mainly the Wilderness Society, and take their bus trips around the state to speak against the corporate take-over of our rural, desert homes.
The energy companies first started planning 2 years ago to install 500 high-tension electrical towers in my area which we only discovered a few months ago! They have lied about these plans and have trespassed on private property and our local Morongo Basin Preserve with their cement markers! The Dept of Water and Power in LA is an evil entity which must be stopped!

Please pray and meditate all you can that these greedy bastards go the right way of providing energy of wind, hydro & solar in their own city and not dump their 20 tons of garbage in our preserves (like they've been trying to do here for 20 yrs) and treat us all like their indentured slaves just because their over-populated city wastes so much energy!

They plan on putting up 'corridors' through ALL 50 states by next year but are starting with 11 Western states right now! There is a 3500 foot width per corridor and they intend of using 'eminent domain' and taking anyone's home that gets in the way! Many of my friends here have moved here to be 'off the grid' and are self-sustaining but now a city which is a 3 hours drive away wants to destroy our health and solitude by claiming its for 'the greater good?'

PLEASE offer up your good thoughts in the universe that this does not occur and we are all left alone!
I've moved 12 times in 20 yrs and this is it--this is my final home which I have made into a wildlife refuge but if there is a mega-watt power line overhead (which causes cancer and more suicides) the animals will no longer come here and we all will be given a sentence of death...all for someone else's profit.

Peace,
Babs
